Taking a look at the natural beauty and weather on Amelia Island, it’s pretty easy to see how it would be perfect for some sports and leisurely activities. Outside of the stellar food options and relaxing options with lodging, I like to make the most of the day with some fun activities.

For those with active lifestyles, Amelia Island sports and leisure are just a part of life out here. While there’s plenty of competitive types on the island, there’s just as much room for those who are just looking for some light fun in the sun.

The island delivers the perfect mix of leisure and adventure for visitors to get up and moving through the day. In this article, I’m breaking down the details on some of the most fun sports and leisure activities I sought out during my recent stay.

Experiencing Sports and Leisure Activities for an Active Coastal Escape

With year-round outdoor activities, Amelia Island promises a mild climate with a scenic landscape to match. Travelers can enjoy everything from sunrise beach jogs to bike rides and a broad range of water sports.

Amelia Island pickleball is another top activity for many people, and there are even more adventurous choices like skydiving for the thrill seekers. However, relaxation is the other side of this coin, which is why things like yoga or spa days are just as popular. It’s all about blending a diverse itinerary that tests the body, mind, and spirit, with the relaxation needed to wake up and do it all again tomorrow.

5 Best Amelia Island Sports and Leisure

From nature trails to coastal preserves, sports centers, resorts, and more, Amelia Island has more than enough to do for solo travelers and groups alike. It’s pretty easy to find a balance between creativity and relaxation.

For me, this generally comes from a combination of a fun day out being active, eating good food, and then picking a cozy rental spot for rejuvenation at the end of the day. To get a better idea of what this could look like for other travelers, I put together some of my favorite activities and leisure options in the list below.

Activities Highlights
Pickleball Indoor/outdoor courts, community events, rentals available, nighttime play included
Kayaking Hidden coves and marshes guide eco-tours, suitable for all skill levels, and sunrise/sunset tours
Golf Mild weather, championship course, strategic layout, GPS-equipped carts
Yoga Classes for all levels, flexible scheduling, wellness workshops, indoor/outdoor options
Spa and Wellness Easy online booking, skilled staff, variety of treatments, open daily

This was more than enough for me during my recent stay, but it’s far from the only options available on the island. However, I was more focused on finding a good balance for my trip rather than trying to do it all in one go. In the sections below, I get into more of the important details behind these activities so others can use them as a supporting guide for their own travels.

1. Pickleball – Serve, Rally, and Repeat

Pickleball is a fast-growing and social sport on the island, with plenty of locations to choose from. I decided to check out what was going on in Fernandina Beach, but players can also check out Central Park or the Peck Center for pickleball courts.

For those who aren’t familiar with the sport, it’s somewhat of a combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong elements. Take it from me, the experience is always super engaging. Amelia Island offers indoor and outdoor courts for the sport, as well as a range of casual games and the potential for some tournaments here and there.

Between the beach and the venues mentioned above, visitors shouldn’t have any trouble finding a spot to play. Although the sport is rather popular on the island, I didn’t find it difficult to find some space for my own matches.

Sport Highlights:

  • I heard Central Park hosts local pickleball community events for learning and socializing
  • Nighttime play is also possible, depending on where visitors go, as some facilities are more than well-lit
  • Don’t hesitate to bring equipment or look into some rentals, as those are also available on the island
  • The scenic surroundings made it a lot more fun too, whether it was at the beach or the beautiful Central Park

2. Kayaking – Paddling Through Paradise

Considering all of the open water in the area, I had to check out what the kayaking options looked like. What I love about kayaking is that it can either be a good workout or one of the most leisurely activities. It’s also a great option that’s open to all skill levels, and there are many trusted kayak rental and excursion companies in the area.

I decided to go with Amelia Island Kayak Excursion as they seem to be a local favorite. The entire experience was smooth from start to finish, and they were prompt and direct in answering any of my questions or concerns.

Of course, this option is definitely open to those who are more experienced and would like to bring their own equipment. Between the close wildlife encounters and various waterways to choose from, I don’t regret adding this activity to the itinerary.

Kayaking Highlights:

  • Kayaking on Amelia Island offers access to hidden coves, tidal creeks, and marshlands
  • Tours are very eco-focused, with an emphasis on education on the island’s delicate ecosystems
  • Many kayaking routes are more than suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike
  • I highly suggest scheduling a sunrise or sunset tour for the most stunning views possible

3. Golf – Tee Off in a Summery Mild Climate

There are quite a few golf courses to choose from, and to be honest, they’re all pretty spacious and gorgeous in their own way. I decided to stay away from the resorts and found the Golf Club of Amelia, which seemed to be perfect for what I was looking for.

The area comes with an award-winning 18-hole, par-72 course, which was designed by Mark McCumber and Gene Littler back in 1987. Outside of that, the course comes with a diverse layout, including moss-draped oaks on the front nine. The rolling marshes are just as pretty, and the golf carts are even equipped with GPS.

Players will find multiple tee options to choose from, and the golf club has some pretty impressive cuisine and drinks in the lounge. I’d say this was definitely one of the most relaxing activities during my stay on Amelia Island.

Golf Highlights:

  • The mild weather makes it easy to golf as long as desired
  • It’s all conveniently located near Fernandina Beach
  • The championship design rewards strategic thinking and precision, offering a challenging play experience.
  • The club is affiliated with Concert Golf Partners, which ensures professional management and high-quality facilities.

4. Yoga – Stretch, Breathe, and Rejuvenate

As with many other Amelia Island sports and leisure activities, yoga isn’t too hard to find. I stopped by Community Yoga + Wellness, as they seemed to be a pretty welcoming little group. Even though I was an outsider, everybody was really kind, and they had some great routines going in my opinion.

With 25 different classes on a weekly basis, they were easily able to fit me in, and they even do online sessions as well. Although I’m usually more keen on outdoor yoga, I was looking for a place that would be more welcoming than anything.

They made me feel like family for the afternoon and even offered some suggestions on other activities or places to eat I should check out during my stay. I’ve been a fan of yoga for years, and this place definitely helped me get my fix on a last-minute notice.

Yoga Highlights:

  • Many studios offer specialized classes such as hot yoga, restorative yoga, and meditation-focused sessions
  • Flexible scheduling allows visitors to fit yoga into morning, afternoon, or evening routines
  • Some yoga sessions are paired with wellness workshops, including mindfulness and stress-relief techniques
  • There are plenty to choose from between indoor and outdoor yoga sessions

5. Spa and Wellness – Indulge and Recharge

Nearing the end of my trip, I was looking forward to a spa day to top it all off. Once again, this is a leisurely activity that isn’t hard to come by on Amelia Island. However, due to this, it can be hard to choose, considering there are so many.

After a little research, I ended up going with Drift Day Spa, and they had everything I was looking for. From deep tissue, Swedish, trigger point therapy, and more, it was honestly a dream of an experience.

I was also a huge fan of the skin care services, whether it was custom facials or microdermabrasion; all of it was handled very professionally. Couples massages are also available, and they even have an area for spa therapy, which I thought was a nice specialty touch. While Drift Day Spa is far from the only option available in the area, I’m pretty happy they ended up being my choice.

Spa Highlights:

  • Drift Day Spa offers online booking for easy scheduling, and they also accommodate same-day appointment requests
  • The staff is highly skilled and compassionate, with a focus on enhancing quality of life for the long term
  • It’s important to know they do strongly enforce a 24-hour cancellation policy
  • The spa is open seven days per week with consistent hours, making it pretty easy to access.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, Amelia Island sports and leisure offers the perfect blend from my point of view. It’s easy to find plenty of activities on both sides, and the surrounding scenic environment and weather make it that much better.

Better yet, my lodging situation definitely added to the relaxation, thanks to the help I received from Stay Better Vacations. They helped me avoid a lot of the usual headaches with booking accommodations and pointed me in the right direction for the activities I was looking for. Overall, Amelia Island is a great experience, and it’s easy to feel like a local when visitors decide to soak it all up.
